Herdshare:

Per share pricing reflects the price of meat that is cut, vacuum sealed, and then frozen. It is free to pick your share up at the farm (we love visitors!), and we also offer limited delivery to the Blacksburg area. Delivery is possible to other areas for a fee, and requires minor coordination on the order form.

Contrary to most animals in the meat industry, our animals (pigs especially) are raised in an environment as close as possible to their natural setting. They have ample fresh air, clean water, and exercise. Interventions are few and far between on the farm, and we believe this makes our meat healthier for us to consume.

Beef and Pork:

Meat shares will have a variety of cuts, roasts, ribs, and ground (or sausage). The specifics are dependent on the animal and how much you are purchasing. If you want to buy a whole animal. you can specify which exact cuts you’d like.

Sheep and Goats:

Sheep and goats are sold by the whole animal. Smaller ruminants are typically prepared into mutton (ground lamb) and chops (steak-style cuts).

Why A Herdshare? We are only legally allowed to sell individual cuts of meat to consumers if the animal is processed at a USDA inspected facility. If you are a business buying for resale then this is how you must purchase from us until the laws of Virginia are changed. If you’re purchasing from us for your own consumption and you’re ok buying a bulk animal share (various sizes available) then we have more flexibility.

Legally what is happening when you buy a herdshare is that you are purchasing fractional ownership in the live animal itself. It is technically your animal once purchased (in conjunction with other “herd-shareholders”) and we are only processing the animal ourselves or taking it to a “custom” butcher facility on your behalf. We track fractional “ownership” of an animal down to 25 lbs for cows and pigs. Sheep and goats are small enough after processing that they are sold simply as a whole carcass (only 1 share per animal available).
