A New Litter Of Mulefoot Piglets
Mulefoot sows (female pigs) are ready to breed within about 18 months of being born (typically around 200-250 lbs). Litters tend to be somewhere between four and six piglets and a sow can reliably get pregnant once every 6-9 months (twice every three years is about what we shoot for). Sows will drop weight during the 6-8 week process of nursing their litter (at which point the piglets are effectively weaned). Boars (male pigs) are castrated around 2-3 weeks of age and in so doing become barrows.
If you are interested in purchasing a “feeder pig” for yourself, weaned pigs are sold at the 8-10 week point (around 20-40lbs). Sows and barrows are $100 each. Boars are $150 each. Older, heavier pigs sell for $2.50/lb live weight.

A Nursing Mulefoot Sow With Her Litter
Mulefoots are a domesticated pig, but they are a lot closer to wild than most breeds. They are excellent foragers and eat just about anything; grasses, grubs, meat, nuts (acorns, walnuts, and hickory nuts are common on our farm). We also supplement our mulefoots with raw milk from our Guernseys, garden veggies during the growing season, and cracked corn from a local farmer.
